Looking for a new hot water tank to replace your existing system? There are three basic types you should consider.

Gas Hot Water Tanks

Gas tanks are faster heating than their electric counterparts but come with a higher upfront cost and shorter lifespan. These types of water heating systems also require venting to the outside of the home.

Electric Hot Water Tanks

Electric heaters are usually less expensive than gas heaters and are a good option for those who don’t have natural gas at home. A drawback is they are slower to heat the water and you can sometimes run out of hot water in the middle of a shower!

Tankless or On-Demand Water Heaters

Save Up to 70% on your Hydro bill with a tank-less water heater that only heats up water when you need it making them more energy efficient versus conventional tanks.
Frequently Asked Questions

How long should a hot water tank last?

A well maintained electric tankless hot water heater can last up to twenty years. Gas hot water tanks have an average lifespan of eight to ten years.

How long should a hot water tank last?

If you notice that your hot water has a rusty taste or red tint, or if the hot water heater is making a loud rumbling noise, has water leaking or puddling around it, or if your water takes forever to heat or doesn’t heat up at all then you should have your tank looked at as it may need repair or replacement.

How much does a hot water tank cost in BC?

The average cost to replace a hot water tank ranges from approximately $1,000 to $3,000 for a 40-to 50-gallon tank.

Where do I find my hot water tank thermostat?

The thermostat will be located on the exterior of the water heater behind the control panel for the temperature. An electric water heater will have two thermostats located at the top and bottom of the unit. A gas water heater has one thermostat located at the bottom of the unit.

How come I do not have as much hot water as I used to?

This can be caused by a number of reasons such as needing a larger capacity water heater, your gas pressure is too low, or you may need to increase the temperature on your thermostat – be careful when increasing the temperature as it can lead to painful burns and scalding. Your tank may also need to be drained to help remove build-up of sediment or lime.
